Cats from Leuven {Belgium}

Poescafé Leuven

Attention cat lovers! Next time you’re in the Belgian city of Leuven, here’s the purr-fect place for you to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry: Poescafé

In case you wouldn't know, cat cafés are delightful places where customers can enjoy lunch or coffee with furry friends surrounding them. They were conceived to give people who do not have pets the opportunity to spend time with them. According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), the proximity of pets relieves stress, anxiety, and depression.

The world's first cat café, Cat Flower Garden, opened in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan, and is apparently still running. Taiwan is definitely a cat lover’s place to be as they even have an island dedicated to cats called Houtong

Cat cafés have been present in Belgium since 2014

The first Belgian cat café – Le Chat Touille – opened its doors in Brussels. Since then, Belgian cities such as Kortrijk, Ghent, Liège, La Louvière, Namur, Tournai, and Leuven, also host establishments where you can have a drink surrounded by cats.

The idea of opening her own cat cafe came to founder Hanna Buttiens during a beautiful walk in nature. That same (sleepless) night, she completely worked out what the ideal cat cafe should look like. She wanted the place to feel like a cozy living room – with snuggly corners, soft lighting, blankets, cat books (including Avalon and Clowders), air-purifying plants, hot drinks, home-made pastry, and, of course, cuddly little residents.

The word got through to Helena Berben, and, as a fellow animal lover, she too was immediately won over by the idea. After a few brainstorming sessions, they decided to make their dream a reality.

Poescafé is currently home to only four cats: Lizzie, Lucy, Anna, and Bowie.

At this time, they are not planning to take in another cat, but they are willing to consider the possibility if a shelter cat can't find a home.

Sisters Lizzie and Lucy are the most sociable of the bunch. They themselves take the initiative to come and cuddle with customers, and they love to sleep on their coats and bags. They were given to the café by a couple who could not longer take care of them.

Bowie, too, is friendly and cuddly, and he sleeps on people's laps whenever he can.

Anna, on the other hand, is more aloof. This Ragdoll will allow customers to cuddle her, but she can't hide the fact that she doesn't like this very much.

The cats need to feel at home, as they 'work hard' all day to create a relaxed atmosphere. That's why Poescafé has provided several hiding and resting places for them, both in the café as well as outside in the cat court. If a cat is unhappy at the café, the owners of Poescafé will find them a new home.

Cats from Vis {Croatia}

cat calendar

Christmas is coming!

What better gift for your cat-loving friends (and yourself) than this beautiful calendar featuring the street cats of Vis?

By purchasing this cat calendar, you will be directly supporting the work of Street Cats of Vis, a small, volunteer-run project in Vis, Croatia.

Vis is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Croatia, located about two and a half hours from the mainland.

Resources for humans are rudimentary there, and for animals it's even worse.

For over 20 years, there was no vet on the island, but now there's a small vet clinic that's open once per week (usually), and the town of Vis pays for the sterilization of its street cats.

Street Cats of Vis was founded as an all-volunteer project back in the pre-vet days to help street cats all over the island.

Spaying and neutering is still not a widely accepted practice.

Many people prefer to let nature take its course, resulting in overpopulation and the unnecessary suffering of so many unwanted cats and kittens

Dumping, poisoning, and other cruelties are unfortunately still common.

Progress has been made through targeted TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts as well as the visibility of volunteers doing the work and helping people who want to help cats.

The project relies on donations in order to pay for all other vet bills besides sterilizing, as well as for expenses related to fostering and adoption

Rehoming rescued cats is an important part of the project too, so if you'd like to adopt or can volunteer to transport a cat, please get in contact.

Cats from Breda {Netherlands}

kattencafé familie snorhaar Breda

In Breda, just outside the city center, you will find a cozy café where eight shelter cats have found their forever homes.

Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar (which translates as Cat Café "Whiskers Family") is the purrfect place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea and a bite out of their many homemade treats and dishes.

In case you wouldn't know, a cat café is like a hotel for shelter cats, except that they live there. Visitors are being allocated a table where they can relax with the cats while enjoying a drink and delicious food.

The concept originated in Taiwan and Japan. The initial idea was to provide a service to people who are unable to keep their own pets at home (which is often the case in Asian countries).

Nowadays, cat cafés are basically for everyone who loves cats.

Cat cafés have been present in the Netherlands since 2015.

The first Dutch cat café - Kopjes - opened its doors in Amsterdam. Since then, such Dutch cities as Tilburg, Nijmegen, Groningen, Leiden, The Hague, Zwolle etc also host establishments where you can have a drink surrounded by cats.

Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar resembles a large living room, complete with cat furniture, scratching posts, and cat toys.

It is the ideal forever home of Bobbie, Ollie, Masja, Harry, Boris, Cleo, Stella, and Luna.

The cats have all been carefully selected for their character and traits to ensure that these cats are people-oriented and attention-loving. They enjoy living in a group, and they are comfortable staying indoors.

In addition, the cats can always retreat to their "cats only" room, when they want to have some time alone.

Unfortunately – unlike many other cat cafés – the cats of Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar are not up for adoption.

The reason behind this is that the group composition would constantly change, which is very stressful for cats.

However, if a cat does not feel at home at Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar, the owners of the café will make sure that the unhappy feline gets a new home.

If the idea of spending several hours in the company of these lovely cats isn't enough, know that Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar is also organzing regular activities, such as yin yoga, game nights, and workshops.

Also, they have the most delicious loaded nachos – made with shredded jackfruit, cheddar, sour cream, and vegetables – which you can try during the café's Catty Hour, each Friday from 02:00 pm to 05:00 pm.

The café even has several books for you to read and flip through, including the feline supernatural thriller Clowders.

Kattencafé Familie Snorhaar can get crowded, so reserving a table is recommended.

This reservation costs 2,50 euros and allows you to stay for two hours.

In that time, you can eat and/or drink something tasty and, of course, cuddle with the cats.

Afterwards, other visitors get the chance to take a seat in the cafe. Of course, on quiet days, you can stay longer.
