A short history of Pérouges

Pérouges carries a rich history that spans centuries. Its origins trace back to the Roman era, after which it evolved into a thriving medieval center. The village’s strategic location atop a hill provided a vantage point for defense, leading to its fortification during the Middle Ages.

Throughout the years, Pérouges flourished as a bustling trading hub, known for its production of woven goods and textiles. The village’s medieval architecture, characterized by timber-framed houses and cobbled streets, reflects its prosperous past. While the decline in trade eventually shifted Pérouges into relative obscurity, its historical significance and well-preserved charm have earned it a place in the hearts of locals and visitors, making it a living testament to the enduring spirit of the past.

Pérouges one-day itinerary

Encompassing about 1.42 square kilometers (0.55 square miles), Pérouges stands as a small village with a relatively modest population. That means one day is more than enough to see the village in its entirety. Here’s a suggested itinerary of what to do and see during your visit to Pérouges:

Morning

  • La Porte d’En Bas: Begin your exploration at “La Porte d’En Bas” (which translates to “The Lower Gate” in English). This medieval gate is the entrance to the village and welcomes you into the heart of Pérouges, setting the stage for your journey back in time.
  • Medieval streets and filming locations: Strolling along the narrow, cobbled streets of Pérouges, you’ll find yourself transported to a bygone era. Take in the sight of well-preserved medieval architecture, featuring timber-framed houses, stone buildings, and delightful courtyards. These streets served as a filming location for many famous movies and TV shows, including La Fille de d’Artagnan (1994) by Bertrand Tavernier, Le Tartuffe (1984) by Gérard Depardieu, and The Three Musketeers (2011) by Paul W.S. Anderson.
  • Place du Tilleul: Head to Place du Tilleul, the central square of Pérouges. This bustling square is surrounded by quaint cafes and shops, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the ambiance. This is also a good spot to have lunch later in the day. Some recommended options for lunch are Le Relais de la Tour, Le Pérouges, or Café du Commerce.
  • Museum of Pérouges: Visit the Museum of Pérouges or Musée de Pérouges, also located at the Place du Tilleul, to delve into the village’s history and learn about its medieval past. The museum provides insights into the daily life of the village’s inhabitants throughout the ages.

Afternoon

  • Artisan workshops: Explore the artisan workshops and galleries scattered throughout Pérouges. Discover traditional craftsmanship, including pottery, textiles, and other handmade goods.
  • Church of Saint-Marie-Madeleine: Visit the Church of Saint-Marie-Madeleine, a beautiful Romanesque church located in the heart of Pérouges. Admire its architectural details and step inside to experience the tranquility of this historic place of worship.
  • Ramparts and views: Walk along the village’s ramparts for panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The elevated vantage points offer a unique perspective of Pérouges and its charming surroundings.
  • Cat spotting: Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Pérouges’ abundant feline residents. Most of them have owners who treat them like treasured, indulged pets. But like in nearly every village, there’s a pack of “gutter cats” too. Some are unwanted strays; others’ owners have died or moved away. Regardless, there’s always someone who feeds and looks after them.

Evening

  • Souvenir shopping: Before departing, browse the local boutiques for souvenirs, artisanal crafts (such as pottery and textiles), and unique gifts to remember your visit by.
  • Dinner in Pérouges: If time permits, enjoy a leisurely dinner in Pérouges to savor more of the local flavors before you depart. A good choice is Le Fleuron, known for its French cuisine and cozy ambiance.
