Carrapateira is an off-the-beaten-path village in Portugal, tucked away on the wild west coast of the Algarve. If you follow a winding road from Bordeira Beach down into the leafy valley of Carrapateira, you’ll arrive at a unique Portuguese hideaway: Monte da Vilarinha. It’s basically ten family-friendly living units, spread between three different houses, each with high bamboo-and-beam ceilings and terracotta-tiled floors. During the day, you can go hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Or you could stay at Monte da Vilarinha to get to know the resident cat.

The location of Monte da Vilarinha

Let’s start with the location of Monte da Vilarinha, as this is the most important factor in deciding where to stay in Carrapateira.

From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning natural surroundings. The hotel is nestled amidst lush greenery and rolling hills, offering panoramic views of the picturesque Bordeira countryside. It’s the perfect escape for nature lovers and those seeking peace and serenity.

The village of Carrapateira itself – which is located 6.6 km from Monte da Vilarinha – may be small, but it has a big personality, exuding a bohemian vibe. The streets are lined with colorful houses, art galleries, and quirky shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals make Carrapateira a perfect place to unwind and immerse yourself in the local culture.

The rooms at Monte da Vilarinha

The accommodations at Monte da Vilarinha were cozy, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. My room was tastefully decorated, blending modern amenities with rustic charm. It had a high bamboo-and-beam ceiling and a terracotta-tiled floor. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep, and the private balcony provided a delightful spot to soak in the tranquil ambiance.

Breakfast at Monte da Vilarinha

It was incredibly joyful to have breakfast next to the outdoor swimming pool, with nothing but the sounds of nature to accompany you. The breakfast in itself is spectacular, with lots of local produce to choose from: home baked bread, croissants, fresh fruit and a variety of homemade jams and preserves.

Carrapateira is surrounded by the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, a protected area that covers approximately 110 kilometers of stunning coastline, encompassing a diverse range of ecosystems and natural wonders.

It offers visitors a chance to escape into a world of breathtaking cliffs, secluded beaches, and rugged wilderness. The park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, hikers, surfers, and those seeking a tranquil retreat away from the crowded tourist spots.

One of the defining features of the park is its dramatic cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring coastline. These rugged cliffs, carved by centuries of erosion, offer panoramic views of the deep blue sea, providing a perfect backdrop for memorable hikes and scenic walks. Walking along the cliff paths, visitors can spot a variety of bird species, including peregrine falcons and white storks, which thrive in the park’s diverse ecosystem.

Costa Vicentina Natural Park is also home to an incredible array of flora and fauna. The park’s rich biodiversity includes over 750 plant species, some of which are endemic to the region. The diverse landscapes, ranging from sand dunes to freshwater lagoons and Mediterranean scrubland, provide a habitat for numerous animal species, such as otters, wild boars, and the endangered Iberian lynx.

Praia do Amado, Praia da Arrifana, and Praia da Bordeira are just a few examples of the park’s picturesque beaches, each with its own unique charm and allure.

In addition to its natural wonders, Costa Vicentina Natural Park is also steeped in cultural heritage. The region has a rich history, with traces of human presence dating back thousands of years. Ancient archaeological sites, traditional fishing villages, and charming coastal towns dot the landscape, providing a glimpse into the area’s past and local way of life.
