When you walk along the beach of Conil de la Frontera in Spain, you'll find things you would never expect. One of these things is Cat Village or City of Cats: a sanctuary for stray cats.
Cat Village a secret place, close to the tourist bustle yet hidden. Every year, thousands of tourists walk by, but hardly anyone ever notices. In fact, if you want to see the cats, you have to go inside the bamboo forest.
"At the start of the beach promenade, I saw an Englishwoman named Julie Lloyd Wyatt regularly disappearing behind the bamboo, but I never knew where she was going. Now I know she went to the cats' little hiding place," says Traveling Cats reader Claudia Mannes. "Together with a group of volunteers, Julie built several miniature houses made out of cardboard boxes and rendered watertight with plastic sheeting. All have warm blankets inside. With the help of a local veterinarian, the cats are spayed/neutered and sick ones are being treated."
"Unfortunately, the locals aren't very committed. There are many street cats in Conil de la Frontera, and many people just drop their excess kittens here," says Claudia Mannes. "Last year, 40 felines were brought to Cat Village and the year before 60. While all these beach cats are being cared for, the aim is to find a home for all these sweethearts.
Anyone interested in adopting, can contact Julie Lloyd Wyatt via Beach Cats Conil de la Frontera.

DeleteLovely photos but such a sad story. https://teespring.com/CatsLover We are helping to raise funds to save our community cats. Need your help to support if possible. Thank you so much. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Doris, yes the photos are lovely, and so are all our great beach cats, good luck with your cause also xxx
DeleteIt is so wonderful to have such caring and thoughtful people in the world. It is too bad irresponsible people take advantage of that generosity. We live out on a farm and we often hear stories of cats being dropped off in yards with barns. People are lying to themselves when they drop off an animal and tell themselves that the cat will be taken care of there.
ReplyDeleteThank you Andrea, yes we have a big problem with people leaving the kittens here but we have had them all rehomed and they have gone on to have a wonderful life. When it is the kitten season we dread going to feed the cats for fear what we find, many are left in a bad way full of fleas, colds, injuries but we take them straight the vets for treatment. It is wonderful when you see them fully recovered and living in the luxury of their new homes , so a great happy ending xxxx
Deleteso amazing
ReplyDeleteThank you the cats are all amazing and very affectionate xxx
DeleteWow! I am happy to see that somebody takes cares of these cats. Hope the place continues to have the resources to care for the felines.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ruth, yes let's hope we have some much needed help with people and funds for our cause xxxx
DeleteThose poor kitties, I hope they all get their forever homes.
ReplyDeleteThank you yes if we could get some homes for the adults it would be fantastic 😽😽
DeleteIt's wonderful that people are helping these cats, especially getting them spayed/neutered. The problem must seem overwhelming. I sure hope a lot of them can get homes. The pictures and place are amazing!

DeleteIt is so fantastic to read all your comments and have your support a huge thank you. We love all our beach cats very much and it would be fantastic if we could have some of our adults rehomed, people like to have the kittens primarily which is also great.

What totally sweet pictures of the cat village! Hoping for the best for them. Especially sweet is the photo of the blade of grass tickling the nose of a light colored cat.

ReplyDeleteJennifer
Thank you Jennifer yes the cats are so lovely, we look after them very carefully I am always checking and watching to make sure they are all fit and we'll, putting cream on any little scrapes they have and washing any dirty marks so they always look their smartest. I try and give them regularly brushes some of them love others can't be bothered with it. 😉😉
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing all the wonderful pictures of these sweet babies. So glad they have caring people to look after them. Would be so wonderful if more of them could find forever homes. Or even a permanent shelter building made for them... Love the beautiful blue eyes on the Siamese sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteThank you Katie, yes a permanent safe shelter would be a dream come true for us. The Siamese blue sweetheart is our ziggy he is very nervous but allows me a quick stroke especially if I give him some ham 😊😊😊
DeleteI was surprised to see kitty resting so happy in a human's arms. I expected the colony to be completely feral, but it looks like that's not the case at all. I'm so glad that they have volunteers watching for them.
ReplyDeleteJean from Welcome to the Menagerie
Hi Jean
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment, our cats aren't feral at all. We have 20 regular adult cats and I can stroke them all and can pick up most of them, they are used to me and I'm a good source of food so I guess that's why I am allowed to do this. They are all very much loved and would make wonderful pets let's hope we get some adopted this year 😊😊
And they are all so pretty! I hope they can continue to care for them and find homes.
ReplyDeleteThank you and yes let's hope we can find homes in the meantime we will continue to care for them xx

ReplyDeleteHi Julie - stumbled across your blog and love what you are doing. Hce a question my cat ( rescue from Madrid) looks like your 5th photo from bottom. Regular cat frame but apricot siamese colouring - seems theres loads like these in spain. Is it a spanish breed or just from siamese mix ins? My cat behaves more like acdog than a cat too and is very affectionate, any ideas?
