Meeting the Mokafé cat

I spent the past three weeks at the Offscreen Film Festival in Brussels where I introduced several of their movies. An unexpected encounter added an extra touch of delight to my time at the festival.

In the superb Galerie du Roi, near the festival’s main venue, I saw an absolutely charming tuxedo kitty on the terrace of Mokafé Taverne, a popular brasserie known for its traditional Belgian cuisine.

With each adorable pose, this feline entertainer effortlessly captured the attention and affection of Mokafé Taverne’s patrons as they were enjoying their Belgian waffles and coffee.

Rumor has it the cat is Mokafé Taverne’s most frequent and beloved guest.

While researching this article, I stumbled upon a YouTube video featuring another cat living at Mokafé Taverne. Apparently, the brasserie used to have another feline mascot: Moka. Sadly, Moka passed away in June 2007.

About Mokafé Taverne and Galerie du Roi

Mokafé Taverne is an institution in Brussels.

A lot has to do with its prime location in the Galerie du Roi, a renowned shopping arcade celebrated for its architectural beauty. Dating back to 1847, it played a pioneering role as one of Europe’s first covered shopping arcades, catering to the emerging desires of the bourgeoisie for luxury goods and fashionable boutiques. It left an indelible mark on architectural trends that later spread to other cities across the continent.

Its neoclassical design is visually striking. Ornate ironwork, decorative stucco, and intricate mosaics adorn both the interior and façade of the arcade, What truly steals the show, however, is the glass roof, which allows natural light to bathe the passageway.

Today, Galerie du Roi remains a haven for tourists, housing luxury boutiques, chocolatiers, high-end restaurants, and even a cinema.

The two-storey Mokafé Taverne is part of this. With its wooden walls and grand chandeliers, the brasserie exudes the charm of a bygone era. Its terrace, nestled within the Galerie du Roi itself, provides an unparalleled vantage point to immerse oneself in the splendor of the arcade’s design.

Beyond its captivating setting, Mokafé Taverne is renowned for its wide array of Belgian specialties, including homemade shrimp croquettes, Flemish stew, Liège meatballs, mussels, and Brussels waffles.

Everything about Mokafé Taverne encapsulates the essence of traditional Brussels bistros.
