Cat from Gračišće {Croatia}

Squeaky the cat is a local celebrity in Gračišće, a hilltop village in Istria, Croatia, but not for the reasons you might suspect. She's originally from Bangalore, India, where she was an avid hunter. Her owners brought her to Gračišće to come and live with them. This is seen as odd and amusing by the locals, because in Croatia cats and dogs are often not allowed inside the house and there are clear limits on how affectionately pets are treated. You can read squaky's complete story here.

Cat from Strasbourg {France}

Every September, the entire city of Strasbourg, France, is dedicated to the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival. This kitty in a stroller was spotted at the village fantastique while lounging through the stalls selling horror movies, posters, books, and action figures.

Three years after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that crippled Japan's nuclear reactors, abandoned dogs, cats, and other animals still roam the ghost towns of the evacuation zones. Volunteers are doing their best to try and save these animals. Some people even stayed behind in dangerously radiated areas, specifically to help the animals.

Tara the cat was the star attraction at a Bakersfield Blaze home game at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield, California. She was allowed to toss the first pitch and was carried onto the field by Roger Triantafilo, whose son she saved from a dog attack earlier that week. She's been quite the local hero ever since.

In conjunction with Underrated Treasures Day, I'd also like to introduce you to Rhubarb: The Millionaire Cat, a comedy from 1951 about a feline inheriting the ownership over a baseball team. Based on the novel by H. Allen Smith, Rhubarb: The Millionaire Cat is mostly unknown these days, but it's still a fun and easy movie for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Eirwena

Stray cats abound on the Greek island Crete, most of them loitering around tavernas hoping for a handout. But Eirwena is one of the lucky few. She lives in Russia, but often travels to Petrokefalo in Crete to visit family. She even has her own blog, http://eirwena.blogspot.com, a collection of conversations between Eirwena and her biped Indy, interspersed with lots of pictures. It's truly one of the funniest cat blog's I've come across, so be sure to check it out. Eirwena will soon have her own book as well.

"This cat is particularly interesting because of her three-colored eyes," says photographer Donna Davis. "She quietly came over to visit while we were picnicking at Nagtabon Beach, on the island of Palawan, in the Philippines."

Forget about the Vondelpark, the Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. If you're a cat lover, there are more important things to do in Amsterdam. You could start your trip with the floating cat sactuary The Cat Boat, follow up with the cat museum, and end your day with a walk along the canals to meet the felines featured above.

No trip to Amsterdam is ever complete without a visit to the famous Poezenboot, known in English as the cat boat. This floating cat sanctuary, located on a boat in Amsterdam's picturesque canal belt the Singel, is one of the city's main tourist attractions. It's been on my bucket list ever since I first heard about it and I finally had the chance to stop by this past Tuesday.

Seen a kitty you like? Know that most of them are available for adoption. Those that remain at the cat boat can be financially supported.

Find out more about the cat boat in Amsterdam here.

In other news, Traveling Cats is featured in the August/September edition of the Dutch cat magazine Me And My Cat. Be sure to get a copy if you have the chance. More press clippings here.
