The Albert Market in Banjul, The Gambia, is such a colorful place to visit. The locals sell mainly vegetables, fruit, and fish, but clothes are also on offer. It’s not the most hygienic of all markets (the uncooled fish attracts many flies), but thanks to the authenticity it's well worth a little tour. Only one problem: the vendors didn't want me to photograph the cats. Several of them yelled, and one woman even threw salads at me.
My trip to The Gambia was sponsored by the Gambia Tourism Board, Bamboo Garden Hotel, and SN Brussels Airlines.
A woman threw salads at you? Wow! I wouldn't be able to resist taking pictures of the cats either, so I'd probably get scolded and pelted with salad too. ;)

ReplyDeleteHello et MERCI pour ces belles photos des chats en Gambie !
Bon mardi et douces pensées d'Asie !!!!
Why did they not want you to photograph the cats?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I asked several Gambians and no one could tell.
DeleteI loved Banjul and Albert Market! Wish I could visit more of Africa, but the places there I HAVE visited have been so beautiful, educational, and enlightening. Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos.
ReplyDeletePleased to say after ten years of visiting and photographing in The Gambia, I've never had anything thrown at me!
ReplyDeleteI did have someone say to me once in the Gambia "Why do you only photograph the negative things?" Firstly it isn't true, I photograph pretty much everything. Occasionally that might be something sad but mainly its something good. I wander if the people who saw you photographing the cats thought it portrayed the market in a bad light. It's the only thing I can think of.
That's an interesting remark, Kathryn. I never thought of that before.
DeleteDo you think it was superstition or something of that nature as to why you weren't allowed to photograph the cats? That must have been scary being yelled at and having salad thrown at you. My posts on my blogs (Amanda's Books and More and 1camera1mom) are about cats in South Africa - our cats and my in-laws' cats. My linky is here at

What a strange thing to throw, luckily is was soft, but kinda wired, they must have some sort of superstition. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteAttaquée à coup de salades.... ça au moins c'est original !
ReplyDeleteMais on se demande vraiment pourquoi elles ne veulent pas que les chats soient pris en photos !
Bonne soirée
