Cat from Mystras {Greece}

Mystras in southern Greece is one of the last Byzantine enclaves and also the home to a few dozen cats, most of them living near the convent of Pantanassas.

Cat from Cassis {France}

This kitty was found meandering through the winding streets of Cassis, a picturesque coastal village in the south of France. Cassis is only twenty miles east of Marseille and very much worth a visit.

Cats from Saint-Gilles {Belgium}

Belgium has just opened its first cat café: Le Chat Touille.

Located in Saint-Gilles (part of Brussels), Le Chat Touille is home to five cats that were all adopted from the local shelter WAHF.

Everyone can come in for free to cuddle the cats and eat/drink something in their company. It is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 12 pm to 8 pm.

I visited Le Chat Touille on Tuesday and spent the entire afternoon with their cats Fripouille, Noël, Coca, Simba, and Chiquita. They are all very relaxed and are definitely enjoying their new life in this tiny green cat café. As Le Chat Touille is only a ten-minute-drive from where I live, I will certainly come back here to dine with a friend or to write.

Cat from Klis {Croatia}

Traveling cat spotted at the medieval Fortress Of Klis in Croatia. Perched on an isolated rock above a village bearing the same name, the Fortress of Klis was the seat of many Croatian kings and has been lost and re-conquered several times.

Cats from Drincham {France}

I've been trekking around French Flanders in the far north of France for the past two days and passed the night in the guest house Au Gallodrome in Drincham. With its warm colors, wooden decoration and pans/kettles hanging from the ceiling, Au Gallodrome is the ideal place to spend a cold autumn evening, sipping from local beers and tasting homemade specials in front of the fireplace. But one of the best things about this cozy little guest-house: their two cats, Enzo and Kali. Enzo is a gentle sixteen-year-old who loves to sleep and Kali an impressive nine kilos of pure beauty.

Cats from Banjul {The Gambia}

The Albert Market in Banjul, The Gambia, is such a colorful place to visit. The locals sell mainly vegetables, fruit, and fish, but clothes are also on offer. It’s not the most hygienic of all markets (the uncooled fish attracts many flies), but thanks to the authenticity it's well worth a little tour. Only one problem: the vendors didn't want me to photograph the cats. Several of them yelled, and one woman even threw salads at me.

Cats from Kembujeh {The Gambia}

Last Saturday, I visited the Baobab Cultural Center in Kembujeh as a guest of the Gambia Tourism Board and SN Brussels Airlines. On the craft market, local people showcased their skills and sold their art. Most of all, though, the tourists come to Kembujeh to start their trip to Makasutu Cultural Forest with a drink, which was exactly what I did too. But not before photographing the local cats. Then, a dugout canoe rowed me along the river Mandina Bolong which is surrounded by mangroves, an absolutely stunning part of The Gambia. Back ashore, it’s time for a guided walk through the Makasutu Cultural Forest or a swim in the elephant-shaped swimming pool of Base Camp.

Cats from Kerr Sering {The Gambia}

I'm currently on a press trip in The Gambia in West Africa. While I'm writing this, I'm sitting on the balcony of my hotel, the recently re-opened The Coconut Residence, which is one of the coziest resorts I've visited in the country. Several green velvet monkeys sit next to me and sunbathe near the swimming pool. Sometimes, a cat walks by.
