They originally come from Hungary, and the cat's name is Hihi (pronounced at Chichi). The scene reminded me a lot of the books A Streetcat Named Bob and The World According To Bob. Just like in those books, Hihi adored his owner (lots of headbutts), socialized with passers-by, loved to be petted, and was comfortable walking around without a leash.
