Tashirojima is a small island off the coast of Japan with around 150 cats for 70 inhabitants. The cats were imported to chase the mice that harmed the silk production. The island's population doesn't produce silk anymore (the majority is now retired), but the cats have stayed. Tashirojima is now known as the 'cat island'. Tourists can stay in vacation homes that are shaped and decorated like cats.
