Chassepierre

My parents-in-law treated us to a weekend trip to Chassepierre last week. Situated in the Belgian Ardennes, Chassepierre is bordered in the East by the river Semois and in the south by France.

The river flows through the village, providing a beautiful backdrop to the picturesque houses along its banks. You can rent a kayak or a paddleboat and explore the river on your own, or take a guided tour and learn more about the area’s history and culture.

Chassepierre

The name “Chassepierre” originates from the Latin words “casa petra” meaning “stone house,” paying homage to the 18th and 19th century homes that grace this village.

There are also several historic buildings, including the Church of Saint Nicolas and the ChĂąteau de Chassepierre. If you’re a history buff, these buildings are definitely worth a visit.

Ardennes

One of the best things to do in Chassepierre is to simply stroll through the village.

Chassepierre is super small, though, so you might want to think about hiking or biking through the nearby forests and hills as well. The area is known for its beautiful trails and stunning views, and there are plenty of routes to choose from. For a more laid-back experience, you can also take a leisurely stroll along the Semois River and enjoy the scenery.

Chassepierre festival

Chassepierre is also famous for its annual street theater festival, which takes place every year in August. The festival attracts performers from all over the world, and the streets of the village come alive with music, dance, and theater. If you’re lucky enough to be in Chassepierre during the festival, make sure to check it out.

Les Jeannes

But the best part of Chassepierre… Les Jeannes

We stayed in the B&B Les Jeannes — super romantic! We heard nothing but rave reviews about Les Jeannes, and we were excited to stay in the colorful little B&B.

Les Jeannes is almost like a destination in itself. All the rooms are decorated with paintings and vintage pieces (one room even had a confession booth in it). It’s all a bit over the top, but in a good way.

Also worth mentioning: the delicious homemade breakfast and dinner, showcasing the flavors of the region’s bountiful local produce. The kind-hearted owners of this exceptional B&B went above and beyond to ensure our every need was met, making our stay even more unforgettable.

And its cats 😾

But I can’t speak of Chassepierre without mentioning its feline inhabitants. Despite being a village with less than 200 residents, it seemed as though the number of cats roaming the streets surpassed that of its human inhabitants. Many of these charming creatures belonged to the B&B Les Jeannes, and they added an extra layer of charm to the already captivating ambiance of the accommodation.

Conclusion

My weekend trip to Chassepierre was a unique experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart, mainly thanks to the originality and welcoming atmosphere of Les Jeannes, and, of course, my encounters with the village’s feline friends.

I hope you will be visiting B&B Les Jeannes in Chassepierre as well. If you do, make sure to greet its friendly felines and snap a few pictures of them to remember your trip by.

2023 update

Unfortunately, the B&B Les Jeannes has ceased its operations, resulting in the departure of many of the beloved cats that once roamed the charming streets of Chassepierre. The absence of Les Jeannes has had an impact on the feline community, leaving a noticeable void in the village.
